November 2006

My mom (Eileen) and I went to Edisto Island for an early Thanksgiving celebration.

Some of the fun things we did while in Edisto were:

We went into Charleston a few days. We did lots there...
Went to Patriots Point and took a tour of the aircraft carrier. Some of the neat aspects of being out on the carrier - besides its size - are that my cousins' other grandfather used to work on carriers. I also dated a guy for a while that visited carriers out on the ocean for work. I just can't imagine.
We went to Dunleavy's Pub on Sullivan's Island for lunch. It so reminds me of home. One may even say it has more personality than The Bluffs.
On a freezing cold morning we took the ferry to Fort Sumter. OK - so I was thinking Fort St. Catherine's in Bermuda on my way out there. I was shocked to step off onto the tiny island and take in what is Fort Sumter. WOW it is tiny.
To warm up that afternoon we saw a IMAX movie. I so think it was about sharks but it escapes me now. We went to the aquarium too - I just love aquariums. They are the dryest way to take in the ocean and it doesn't matter that it is freezing cold outside.

And of course we had lunch with LA while we were there.
On another day we went to Beaufort, SC for a day. We had lunch at this quaint restaurant with a water view. Ahhh - how I miss the ocean. And we went to a park to check out a lighthouse.
And of course we toured Savannah. This time we took the Garden of Good and Evil walking tour. Our tour guide was amazing. He knew so much about the city. He took us to this beautiful Catholic cathedral. I would love to go back and go to a mass there.

We took a tour of a tea plantation - now owned by Bigelow

As well as a tour of a vineyard.
It was a busy trip to say the least. And let me tell you - to get off the island - it is a HAUL!!!

From Eileen: Edisto Island is famous as the place where the free slaves were sent with the 40 acres and a mule after the Civil War. They were to raise indigo there as a means of self support , however an insect or virus attacked the crops and all was lost, as a matter of fact all the indigo crops down South were lost. Great Island: 1 Super market, a couple of restaurants, darling little white churches, plenty of beaches, peaceful sunsets, narrow streets going one way from one end to the other of the Island in length, a long ways away from civilization, just as an island should be

The aircraft carrier at Patroit's Point is the Yorktown(CV10) original Yorktown lost fighting in WWII against the Japanese at the Battle of Midway in 1942.
